MARCH 12-19 RACE PREVIEW

Calgary, Alta. (March 8, 2017) – The final block of races for the alpine, ski cross and para-alpine teams will be held this week on three different continents. The alpine team is in Aspen (USA) for the Audi FIS World Cup Finals. The Audi FIS Ski Cross World Championships will be held in Sierra Nevada (SPA) and the para-alpine team is in Korea for the PyeongChang Paralympic test events. 

Before the World Cup Finals get underway, the ladies’ tech teams have two final World Cup race in Squaw Valley (USA) this weekend with a giant slalom race held Friday and a slalom race on Saturday. 

From March 15 – 19, 2017 the Audi FIS World Cup Finals will be held in Aspen (USA) with nine races to close out the season. 

Erik Guay heads into the World Cup Finals as the 2017 super-G World Champion. This season, Guay has also claimed silver in the 2017 World Championship downhill and two more World Cup third-place finishes. Manuel Osborne-Paradis joined Guay on the super-G podium at the 2017 World Championships and secured himself a spot at the World Cup Finals by amassing four other top ten super-G and downhill finishes. 

Marie-Michèle Gagnon has been making a mark on the speed circuit skiing to a 12th-place finish in the last super-G race. Gagnon is still hunting for her first podium of the season. Erin Mielzynski will be fighting for a good result in the slalom race and Candace Crawford will be looking for experience in both the speed and tech races.

Any athlete that wins a race at the FIS Junior Alpine World Skiing Championships will also win themselves a trip to the Audi FIS World Cup Finals. 

The final ski cross race of the season is also on the calendar this weekend. The best athletes on the Canada Ski Cross team are vying for the World Champion title in Sierra Nevada (SPA) on Saturday, March 18. Marielle Thompson is heading into the race after clinching her third overall Crystal Globe. Brady Leman, Chris Del Bosco and Georgia Simmerling are also top contenders for a podium finish with all three athletes finding the podium at least once this season.

The para-alpine team is in Korea testing out the 2018 Paralympic venues. The team will have the opportunity to get lots of experience on the track with a downhill, super-G, super combined, giant slalom and slalom race being held.
