Calgary, Alta. (March 31, 2017) – The 2017 para-alpine nationals took place at Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort (U.S.A.) and Canadians took national champion titles in multiple categories including men’s visually impaired giant slalom, men’s standing giant slalom, ladies’ standing giant slalom and ladies’ standing slalom.

Alberta’s Alana Ramsay, who won two Crystal Globes this season, one in downhill and one in slalom, was crowned the 2017 giant slalom and slalom national champion. In both the slalom and giant slalom race Ramsay won both runs, making her the decisive champion in both disciplines.

Prospect athlete, Fréderique Turgeon, closed out the season with two great results at the Canadian Championships. In the giant slalom race she narrowly missed out on the podium finishing in fourth-place. In the slalom race she landed on the podium with a second-place finish.

Canadian Para-Alpine Ski Team athlete, Erin Latimer, finished in fifth-place in the giant slalom and in the slalom races.

In the visually impaired cateogry, 18-year-old Brenda MacDonald from Nova Scotia, won both the giant slalom and slalom races, crowning her the national champion in both events.

On the men’s side, Mac Marcoux (Guide: Jack Leitch), who was the 2017 downhill Crystal Globe winner, took the giant slalom national title in the visually impaired category. Tough conditions resulted in a DNF for Marcoux in the slalom race.

In the men’s standing category, it was a podium sweep for Canada on the giant slalom day, with Alexis Guimond taking the national title. This season was Guimond’s first on the World Cup circuit where he made a name for himself landing on the podium multiple times. Joining Guimond on the podium was B.C.’s Braydon Luscombe and Alberta’s Kirk Schornstein, making it a sweep for the Canadian Para-Alpine Ski Team.

Schornstein captured the podium again in the slalom race finishing in second-place and Guimond also landed on the podium again with a third-place finish.

These races close out the race season for the team. The team will be heading to Panorama (B.C.) at the end of April for a spring training camp.
