2017 JUNIOR WORLD ALPINE SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS TEAM CANADA ANNOUNCEMENT
Calgary, Alta. (February 21, 2017) – Alpine Canada announces the 2017 team representing Canada at the 2017 Junior World Alpine Skiing Championships in Åre (SWE).
For the first time in over 30 years, Åre (SWE) will be hosting the best junior athletes in the world, including eight Canadian men and six ladies, vying for the title of World Junior Champion. The event kicks off on March 6th with downhill training and concludes on March 14th with the men’s slalom.
The 2017 Canadian team is comprised of athletes between the ages of 16 and 21 including 2016 Downhill World Junior Champion Valérie Grenier, and 2016 silver medalist, Jack Crawford. Additional development team and identified provincial athletes will be rounding out the team heading to Åre.
“This is a very important event in the development of these athletes and I am excited to see Sweden hosting the event,” said Alpine Canada’s Sport Domestic Director, Dusan Grasic. “Åre is a regular stop on the World Cup circuit and will host the 2019 World Championships. It is a demanding hill, steep and varied terrain and will provide a challenge to all disciplines. I am confident however that the team selected has podium potential and the coaches on the ground will ensure the best possible environment for all.”
The team will be departing for Sweden, February 27th and complete a four day training block, before heading to Åre for DH training on March 6th, to defend their best ever (3rd-place overall, in 2016) finish at a Junior World Championships.
