Sella Nevea, ITA (Jan. 31, 2019) – Canada’s Para-Alpine Ski Team captured three more medals – one silver, and two bronze – on the final day of racing at the 2019 IPC World Para-Alpine Skiing Championships in Sella Nevea, Italy, on Thursday.

Due to incoming weather, Thursday’s super-G counted as both a stand-alone medal event, and towards the super combined. Frédérique Turgeon (Candiac, Que./Club de ski Bromont) raced to two bronze medals in both the super-G and the super combined to bring her total Worlds medal-count to three, having earned silver in the slalom in Slovenia last week.

“It’s been a really good trip for me, starting with (two World Cup wins in) Zagreb, and (three podiums) here at World Champs. I’m coming back home with five medals – I couldn’t dream to get better results,” said Turgeon, who is racing this year as part of the NextGen team of athletes. “It feels amazing to win a medal in super combined – I knew I was able to do it, and I did. I’m really happy and proud of myself.”

Kurt Oatway (Calgary/Regina Alpine Race Team – Saskatchewan Alpine) earned his second silver medal at this year’s Worlds in the super-G held Thursday morning, one day after skiing to silver in the downhill. Oatway finished fourth in the super combined.

“I was shooting for two podiums here. I’m happy and the coaches are happy,” said Oatway of how his performance matched up against original goals for the World Championship. “ My super-G was kind of all over the place, to be honest. It was fast, but also sloppy, which didn’t really give me the time I wanted, but it ended up working out in the right place, so I’m satisfied with it.”

The Canadians earned a total of six World Championship medals, including the five shared between Turgeon and Oatway. Alana Ramsay (Calgary/CADS Alberta) kicked off the podium train with a silver-medal performance in the women’s giant slalom last week in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia – co-host of the 2019 IPC Para-Alpine World Championships.

Rounding out the Canadian results for Thursday’s races were Mel Pemble (Victoria, B.C./B.C. Adaptive Snowsports), one of the up-and-coming NextGen racers, who clocked in with the fourth-fastest time in the super-G and finished fifth in the super combined.

On the men’s side, Braydon Luscombe (Duncan, B.C./B.C. Para-Alpine) – who was 12th in the super-G – was unable to complete his slalom run, while Alexis Guimond (Gatineau, Que./Club de ski Mont-Tremblant) and Alex Cairns (Squamish, B.C./B.C. Adaptive Snowsports) each recorded a DNF in the super-G.
