La Molina, ESP (March 15, 2019) – The Canadian Para-Alpine Ski Team finished second, third, fourth, and sixth in World Cup slalom racing at La Molina, Spain, on Friday.

Adding to her hardware haul, Frédérique (Fred) Turgeon (Candiac, Que./Club de ski Bromont) raced to silver and was joined on the podium by teammate Alana Ramsay, who earned bronze.

Turgeon, who won the World Cup season’s opening slalom races in January, maintains her lead in the overall slalom standings with three races to go – including another slalom on Saturday in La Molina.

“I had a good first run, really aggressive – I felt pretty solid, even though I made a huge mistake,” said Turgeon. “With that I felt super confident (heading into) the second run. I’m super happy to get second place.”

This is Ramsay’s first World Cup podium of the season, having posted a fourth- and two sixth-place finishes earlier in the week. Ramsay was crowned the 2019 IPC Para-Alpine World Championships’ silver-medallist in giant slalom earlier this year, and has been rebuilding her confidence this week following a non-injury crash in downhill training during Worlds in February.

“I’ve had some really tough days getting back out (on the race course), and today was no exception,” said Ramsay of the work she’s put into returning to race form. “I’m still working on getting back on my skis, so getting on the podium today is a bonus. I am looking forward to feeling like myself and getting back into what I love doing best – bashing gates and going fast.”

Competing in the men’s sitting category, Alex Cairns (Squamish, B.C./B.C. Adaptive Snowsports) raced to a fourth-place finish on Friday, while Mel Pemble (Victoria, B.C./B.C. Adaptive Snowsports) was sixth in the ladies’ standing category.

La Molina will host its final World Cup race of the series on Saturday when athletes push out of the start gate for another slalom; the first run is set to start at 3:45 a.m. ET, and the second run is slated to begin at 6:30 a.m. ET. All races can be live streamed at the Canadian Paralympic Team’s Facebook page.
