Canada Takes Silver in Team Race at FIS Ski Cross Junior World Championships

Calgary, Alta. (March 28, 2023) — Canada’s Emeline Bennett (North Vancouver, BC) and Nicholas Katrusiak (Whistler, BC) raced to silver today in the mixed ski cross team race at the FIS Ski Cross Junior World Championships in Passo San Pellegrino, Italy. This is Bennett’s second medal at these world championships after capturing gold in the women’s race on Sunday.

Racing under a cloudless blue sky, and having to deal with gusting winds, Bennett and Katrusiak won their quarterfinal and semifinal heats to advance to the finals. Battling the Swiss, who’d won all their races ahead of the finals, Canada battled hard to claim the silver medal.

“I felt a little pressure today coming off the win on Sunday,” said Bennett. “I didn’t feel the kind of energy that I was hoping for but I hung out with my teammates and we got the vibes going. And with Nick leading in all the heats, it took more of the pressure off. I tried to just ski my own race and not worry about what was going on around me.”

“I was super excited to represent Canada,” said Katrusiak. “This was a new format of racing for me, and I didn’t have a lot of expectations, but I managed to win all my heats which was really rewarding. The team support was amazing, the whole team was out there cheering and you could feel the energy. It was a really fun day.”

“The athletes came into today pumped up from Emeline’s win,” said Adam Bourns, Head Coach Ski Cross Junior World Championships. “The whole team was out there supporting their teammates today and I am so happy with how they skied. These are young athletes, and they were very impressive in adjusting to the conditions. Their training and natural ability really showed today. They did a fantastic job.”
