Roni Remme, Laurence St-Germain race to first career World Cup top-10

Calgary, Alta. (Dec. 29, 2018) – Ontarian Roni Remme (Collingwood, Ont. / Alpine Ski Club), 22, led the Canadians over a two-run slalom race in Semmering, Austria, finishing eighth.

Remme was ninth after the first run and climbed up one spot in the second runto earn her first top-10 finish on the World cup circuit. She was 2.60 seconds behind the race-winner, American Mikaela Shiffrin.

“I’m happy with the way today went,” said Remme. “I really just wanted to go out there and push myself harder than I have been; I made a lot of mistakes, but I’m also really happy with some of my sections as well.”

Teammate Laurence St-Germain (St-Ferréol-les-Neiges, Que. / Mont Ste-Anne Ski Club), 24, was eleventh after the first run and also climbed up one spot in the second leg of the race to earn her first World Cup top-10. Erin Mielzynski (Collingwood, Ont. / Georgian Peaks Ski Club), 28, took advantage of an earlier start position to climb eight spots in the second run, finishing 11th. Amelia Smart (Invermere, BC / Panorama Ski Club) did not qualify for the second run.

The men’s speed team was back in Bormio, Italy, where they converted the icy course used for Friday’s downhill into an equally icy super-G. Saturday’s top Canadian was Dustin Cook (Ottawa/Mont Ste-Marie) in 31st, while Bormio course rookie Jack Crawford (Toronto/Georgian Peaks and Whistler Mountain ski clubs) raced into 35th and teammate Ben Thomsen (Invermere, B.C./Windermere Ski Club) finished 36th.

“Today was probably some of my best skiing of the year,” said Crawford. “I sent it as hard as I could with a few mistakes, (including) one big one at the bottom. Sadly, that’s ski racing and the time didn’t reflect the skiing.”

Italy’s Dominik Paris earned back-to-back wins in Bormio, standing atop the podium in Friday’s downhill and Saturday’s super-G.
