Calgary, AB. (Dec 20, 2023) — It was a memorable day for Alexis Guimond (Gatineau, QC) at the FIS Para Alpine Ski World Cup super-G in Steinach am Brenner (AUT). On this rare occasion with two races on the same day, Guimond placed third in the first race, before topping the podium in the second. Kurt Oatway (Calgary, AB), competing in men sitting, was fourth in the opening race and raced to third in the second race for his second podium in four races this season.
For Guimond, racing in men standing, this is his first career World Cup super-G win since 2018, his fourth podium in four races this season, and ninth consecutive podium dating back to last season.
“This win has been a long time coming,” said Guimond. “I am very thankful for a win in super-G. I was sick and tired of second and third and really wanted a win. I was pretty happy with third in the morning, and it helped in planning for the afternoon race. The goal for the season is to be consistent and to aim for the Crystal Globe and excited to keep the momentum going.”
“I came up a little short in the first race, but the margins were so small that it left me encouraged,” said Oatway. “Even in the second race, I wanted more but a spot on the podium is always a good result, especially with such tight racing. Today is encouraging heading into tomorrow’s race. We’ve done lots of giant slalom training and I’m feeling pretty good.”
Frédérique Turgeon (Montreal, QC), did not finish her first race today and placed fifth in women’s standing in the second, giving Canada five top fives on the day.
