LADIES LAKE LOUISE ALPINE SKI WORLD CUP SNOW CONTROL GETS GREEN LIGHT
Calgary, Alta. (Nov. 21, 2016) - Following a cancelled men’s Lake Louise Alpine Ski World Cup, the weather turned and with colder temperatures the race organizing committee, along with the full resources of the Lake Louise Ski Resort, were able to make enough snow for the ladies Audi FIS Ski World Cup downhill and super G races. The races will kick off on Friday, Dec. 2 with a downhill race, followed by a second downhill on Saturday, Dec. 3 and super G race Sunday, Dec. 4, 2016.
The tireless work of the volunteers continues to be the backbone of the Lake Louise Alpine Ski World Cup. From installing safety systems and fencing, to prepping the racetrack for the world’s fastest skiers, the team has been working overtime to achieve a positive snow control.
For the Canadian Alpine Ski Team, this marks the only stop on the World Cup circuit where athletes have the chance to race on home snow. Lake Louise has been good to Canadians with a total of three victories: John Kucera in the 2006 super G, Jan Hudec in the 2007 downhill and Manuel Osborne-Paradis in the 2009 super G. Canadian women have yet to crack a Lake Louise win but Emily Brydon has landed on the podium twice, Britt Janyk took home a third in the 2007 downhill and Kelly Vanderbeek also took home a third-place in the 2006 super G. Canada’s next generation of alpine women will be looking for points in the coming races. With Lindsay Vonn out of the running due to a recent injury, the podium will surely see a shakeup at this year’s speed events.

About the Lake Louise Alpine Ski World Cup
The world’s fastest skiers descend on Alberta at the end of November each year to compete at the Lake Louise Alpine Ski World Cup. Held in the heart of the majestic Rocky Mountains at Lake Louise Ski Resort, Canada’s highest-profile alpine ski race features the first men’s and ladies’ speed events of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup season. First hosted in 1980, the Lake Louise World Cup event is the first outside Europe to be named to the prestigious Club 5, an organization that brings together the most famous and historic World Cup alpine race organizing committees. The event has become synonymous with the start of the ski season each winter. It also represents the only opportunity male and female Canadian alpine skiers have to win a World Cup on home snow.
