LAKE LOUISE PREVIEW – DECEMBER 2 – 4, 2016

LAKE LOUISE PREVIEW – DECEMBER 2 – 4, 2016

Calgary, Alta. (November 28, 2016) – Winter has arrived around the country just in time for a huge weekend of ski racing! The FIS Alpine Ski World Cup tour is stopping in Canada for the one and only time all season. We hope local fans will come out and cheer on Canadians loud and proud and for everyone else across the country, check out the CBC broadcast schedule at the bottom.

LAKE LOUISE ALPINE SKI WORLD CUP

This weekend, Canada’s Rocky Mountains will play host to the world’s fastest female speed skiers at Lake Louise Ski Resort for the Audi FIS Ski World Cup.  It’s been a longstanding tradition for Lake Louise to host the opening speed events of the season and this year is no exception for the ladies.

Last weekend’s scheduled men’s downhill and super-G races were cancelled due to warm weather conditions. The dedicated Lake Louise volunteers (Sled Dogs) and commitment from the resort, ensured the ladies’ races would go on as planned. All three scheduled speed events, two downhills and one super-G, are a ‘go’ for this weekend.

Canada will have strong representation with four athletes on the roster, including the young speed prodigy, Valérie Grenier who claimed first-place in last year’s World Junior Championship downhill race. At just 20-years-old, Grenier will be looking to capture her first World Cup points in downhill and better her 16th-place finish in last year’s super-G.

In 2014, Candace Crawford took the overall super-G Nor-Am title proving she’ll be on the hunt for points in the Lake Louise races.

Notable shakeups on the women’s side this year will include Lindsey Vonn’s absence on the roster after a crash that will take her out of the next few scheduled races. Lake Louise has been famously dubbed ‘Lake Lindsey’ for her insurmountable success on the track. Canada’s Larisa Yurkiw narrowly missed the podium in recent years but has since retired from World Cup ski racing, leaving the podium up for grabs.
