(Toronto, ON) October 9, 2018 – Some of Canada’s fastest alpine, para-alpine, and Ski Cross racers stopped in Toronto on Thursday to take part in a media tour and host a fundraising cocktail in support of Alpine Canada, its athletes, and its domestic programs.
Skiers Erik Guay, Erin Mielzynski, Phil Brown, Declan McCormack, Morgan Magerry, Candace Crawford, Manny Osborne-Paradis, Alana Ramsay, Kurt Oatway, Brady Leman, and Marielle Thompson took advantage of a short break before the start of the World Cup season to conduct media interviews with various outlets based in Toronto.
Select athletes spent the lunch hour visiting the city’s SickKids hospital to meet and inspire young patients and their families.
The day concluded with a fundraising cocktail hosted by CBC’s Scott Russell and attended by local Podium Club members, sponsors, parents and fans.
During the formal program of the evening, Martha Hall Findlay, Alpine Canada Chair and Vania Grandi, Alpine Canada President and CEO, spoke about the organisation’s goal to raise $1.5 M in individual and corporate donations.
Ski team Alumni Scott Barrett, Janique Pharand, Karen Stemmle, Brian Stemmle, Steve Podborski and Ed Podivinski were also in attendance to send off the current generation of racers.
After the Montreal and Calgary evenings held the previous week, the Toronto cocktail marked the conclusion of two weeks of national media and fundraising events in support of Alpine Canada and its athletes.
In 2017-2018, Alpine Canada enjoyed the support of 57 Podium Club members across Canada, all of who are major contributors to the organisation’s annual fundraising campaign. Alpine Canada’s Podium Club consists of ski racing enthusiasts who commit a minimum contribution of $5,500 per year to the organisation in return for a tax receipt and ski team apparel.
