Canadian’s eighth-place finish earns him berth to World Cup Finals

KRANJSKA GORA, SLO (Mar. 9, 2019) – Trevor Philp (Calgary/Banff Alpine Racers) raced his way into the top-10 – and into the World Cup Finals – by finishing eighth in Saturday’s giant slalom in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia.

Philp was 14th after the first run, and jumped six spots into the top-10 to post a career-best result in World Cup GS racing. His total time of two minutes, 27.68 seconds was less than half-a-second off the podium.

“It was such an amazing day today. My first top-10 in GS, to qualify for World Cup Finals, and to do it in front of so many friends and family here in Slovenia - I couldn’t be happier,” said Philp. “To have my mom here for such a moment is so special too, it’s a day I’ll remember.

“The course was difficult today; we had spring-like conditions which always makes for interesting races. I was able to capitalize on the variable conditions, and I really put everything I had into both runs today.”

Only the top 25 racers in each discipline qualify to compete in the World Cup Finals, which take place in Soldeu, AND, beginning March 11th with downhill training. Racing is scheduled to begin there on March 13th.

Teammate Erik Read (Calgary/Banff Alpine Racers) also made a move in the second run, laying down the fourth-fastest time and improving nine spots to finish 19th with a two-run total time of 2:28.46.

Norway placed two skiers on the podium, with Henrik Kristoffersen winning gold, and Rasmus Windingstad capturing silver. Marco Odermatt from Switzerland won bronze.

In ladies’ racing in Spindleruv Mlyn, CZE, Ali Nullmeyer (Toronto/Georgian Peaks Ski Club) – racing in the second World Cup race of her career – completed the first run but missed qualifying for a second run by 2.02 seconds. Teammate and fellow Ontarian Erin Mielzynski (Collingwood, Ont./Georgian Peaks Ski Club) clipped a gate and posted a DNF.

Kranjska Gora will host a men’s World Cup slalom on Sunday before the White Circus heads to Andorra for the World Cup Finals.
