Kranjska Gora, SLO (Jan. 22, 2019) – Third after the first run, Canada’s Alana Ramsay (Calgary/CADS Alberta) attacked her second run to climb one spot and earn silver in the giant slalom at the 2019 IPC World Para-Alpine Skiing Championships on Tuesday.

Ramsay, who was third in the same event at the 2017 Worlds, shed more than two seconds off her first-run time during her second pass down the course, finishing with a total time of 2:23.20 to capture the Canadian Para-Alpine Ski Team’s first medal of this world championship.

“The second run went much better. I feel like I came out and I showed my skiing ability in that second run,” said the 24-year-old Ramsay, a two-time Paralympic medallist in 2018. “To come back and show what I can do and what I’ve been training (for), it means a lot.”

Canadian NextGen athletes Mel Pemble (Victoria, B.C./B.C. Adaptive Snowsports) and Frédérique Turgeon (Candiac, Que./Club de ski Bromont) made their IPC World Para-Alpine Skiing Championships’ debut, with Pemble displaying consistency across both runs, finishing in fifth, and Turgeon coming in fast in the first run’s first interval, where she clocked in with the second-best time of the run, before skiing out to post a DNF.

The IPC World Para-Alpine Skiing Championships resume on Wednesday with the men’s slalom, and all events are being live-streamed on the CPC Facebook Page, the CBC Gem app, with select races available at radio-canada.ca/sports.
