Are, SWE (Feb. 11, 2019) – Calgarian Jeffrey Read (Calgary/Banff Alpine Racers) was the top Canadian in Monday’s men’s alpine combined at the 2019 Audi FIS Alpine World Championships in Are, Sweden, finishing the day in 29th.
After being delayed due to snow and wind, the weather let up and Monday’s combined featured one downhill and one slalom run, showcasing the best of speed and technical racing. Read posted a solid 25th-place finish in the downhill to set himself up to race sixth in the slalom.
“It ended up clearing up nicely. It was a little grim this morning with the snow and wind but it ended up being really good. The track was really smooth. It was definitely really punchable from higher (bib) numbers, so mine was 40 and I had a solid run. I’m hanging in the top 30,” said Read before heading heading into the slalom.
Read ran relatively smoothly in the top section of the slalom, but recovered from a near-miss in the lower section that threatened to throw him off course completely – adding to his time. He managed to stay on track and make the next gate, and earn a top-30 finish.
“I’ve been doing a lot more speed lately than slalom so I’m definitely a little rusty. I felt little bobbles out there and then one big mistake right before the finish and that was pretty costly. I’ll take this as a good experience,” said Read, who’s been enjoying the opportunity to compete amongst the best racers at his first World Championships. "It was a lot of fun, competing here on the top stage. Worlds has been a great experience.”
Fellow Canadian Brodie Seger (North Vancouver, B.C./Whistler Mountain Ski Club), who posted a top-30 result in last week’s super-G at Worlds, matched his World Championships’ downhill result of 33rd in the downhill portion of the combined, and ended the day in 37th after tackling the slalom course.
