Calgary, AB (January 8, 2020) - Erik Read (Canmore, AB) put two solid runs together to finish with a strong 11th place in the classic evening slalom at Madonna di Campiglio, Italy, scoring his second best career result in the discipline.

Starting with bib 46, Read clocked the 17th fastest time of the first run. He took advantage of an earlier start position in the second run to move up six more spots and wrap up the evening in 11th place in front of an enthusiastic Italian crowd, landing just 1.45 seconds off the leader.

This is Read’s second best career result in slalom following a 7th place achieved close to two years ago at Kitzbuehel. Read’s result also follows a promising 22nd place achieved in last weekend’s Slalom in Zagreb, CRO.

“I knew the snow was going to be amazing here and it was going to be a tight race,” told Read. “In the first run, I was just pushing hard and made a couple small mistakes to end up 17th which I was super pleased with. In the second run, I just wanted to build on that momentum. I pushed hard again and even though I made a few mistakes in spots where I got late, I’m really happy with how I made time at the bottom. I have a top 15 now so I’m super pleased with the day and I’m super happy to build on my result from Zagreb.”

Canada’s best-ever result in the traditional Madonna di Campiglio slalom was achieved on December 2, 2005 by Thomas Grandi who finished 4th in that race. Read’s result is Canada’s second best performance ever in the men’s slalom on that hill.

Canada’s Trevor Philp (Calgary, AB) and Simon Fournier (Mont-Tremblant, QC) did not qualify for the second run.

Race was won by Daniel Yule from Switzerland who clocked a combined time of 1:35.60. He was joined on the podium by Henrik Kristoffersen from Norway (+0.15) and Clement Noel from France (+0.25).

The men’s race circuit resumes on January 11 and 12 in Adelboden, Switzerland with a giant slalom and slalom race. Make sure to tune in to CBC https://www.cbc.ca/sports.
