Calgary, Alta. (March 17, 2018) – Åre, SWE hosted the final alpine races of the season with the World Cup Finals wrapping up today. To race in the World Cup Finals, athletes must be ranked in the top-25 in each discipline they start in. Alpine Canada had three athletes qualified at the end of the season including Manuel Osborne-Paradis in downhill and super-G, Dustin Cook for super-G and Erin Mielzynski in slalom.

Mielzynski (Collingwood, Ont.) had Canada’s best results at the World Cup Finals finishing in 10th-place in the ladies’ slalom. She sat tenth after the first run and continued to show great skiing and fast turns to hold onto a 10th-place finish.

“The race was awesome today!” said Mielzynski. “The snow held up well and it was sunny. The hill was interesting because it was quite flat, which was tough to get over mentally because that’s not my forte. But it’s great to finish the season with another top 10 and hopefully in the top 15 overall, which is big steps for me this season. I’m happy with how the season has finished and I’m ready to build from here.”

Mielzynski had seven top-15 finishes this season, including an 11th-place at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Games. She closes out the season ranked 15th overall in slalom.

On the speed side, Osborne-Paradis (Invermere, B.C.) captured a 15th-place finish in the downhill. In the super-G, Osborne-Paradis made a mistake on the second-last gate and missed the final gate, resulting in a DNF. Osborne-Paradis closes out the season ranked 17th in downhill and 24th in super-G.

Dustin Cook (Ottawa, Ont.), closes out the season with a 15th-place in the super-G for a 17th-place overall in the super-G rankings. Cook had seven top-25 finishes this year, including a 9th-place at the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.

The 2017-18 World Cup season has now come to a close. Athletes will race in National Championships, begin spring camps and head back to the gyms in preparation for next year.
