Calgary, Alta. (March 25, 2018) – Trevor Philp (Calgary, Alta.) picks up the 2018 Giant Slalom Sport Chek National Championship title at RED Mountain Resort. The weather finally cooperated for the last day of the National Championships and Philp was able to pick up the giant slalom title for the third year in a row and for the fourth time in his career. Philp was sitting in second-place after the first run but was able to put the hammer down on the second run to win today’s race by 0.57 seconds.
“It was a great day of racing out, despite some variable snow conditions,” said Philp. “there were some hard sections and some soft sections. The second run was really turny so I just tried to keep the speed going from turn to turn. I’m happy with the end result here today.”
Joining Philp on the podium was Morgan Megarry (Toronto, Ont.) in second-place and Adam Barwood (NZL) in third-place. Megarry is returning to the circuit back from an injury and has had a good year on the Europa Cup, Nor-Am Cup and FIS circuits.
“I’m happy with how things ended up today,” said Megarry. “I was really happy with my first run and I felt I skied really well. I knew I had to keep it up and really push the second run too. I’m happy with my approach. I made a few crucial mistakes but I’m really happy to be on the Nationals podium. It’s my first one.”
Jamie Casselman (Team Panorama) was today’s U19 Giant Slalom National Champion. Justin Vittecoq (Bromont Ski Club) finished in second-place and Cameron Alexander (Whistler Mountain Ski Club) finished in third-place.
“Today was a really good day,” said Casselman. “There were some tough conditions but the course crew and all the volunteers worked really hard to make it a good race. I just stayed focused and pushed through and I came out with a good result. I’m very happy to be the U19 Giant Slalom National Champion!”
Today’s race closes out the National Championships held at RED Mountain Resort in Rossland, B.C. Alpine Canada wishes to extend a tremendous thank you to the resort and all the volunteers who worked so hard to make these races happen.
