Calgary, Alta. (March 9, 2016) – Nakiska Ski Resort played host to the 2017 U19 Sport Chek Canadian National Championships, where athletes vied for the U19 National Championship title.
Starting the week off with speed on Nakiska’s famous Map Maker run, it was Quebec ski team member Sierra Smith, who took home the U19 downhill gold.
Also, standing on top of the podium for the men’s downhill was BC Alpine’s provincial team member, Max Kirshenblatt.
Following the downhill races, the super-G races were contested. BC Alpine’s Kyle Alexander took the top spot for the U19 men in super-G. Kristina Natalenko BC Alpine provincial team member took home the U19 gold on the women’s side.
Heading into the tech series, the snow fell hard and after tireless efforts of the volunteers and ROC, the excessive amount of snow forced the cancellation of the giant slalom races.
With the weather easing up and the overnight grooming complete, the track was set and the race went off on Sunday for the U19 slalom championships. Frances MacDonald (BC) took home gold for the ladies and Declan McCormack (ON) won gold for the men.
Congratulations to all athletes and coaches and thank you to the volunteers who produced a fantastic event.
The super-G Canadian Championships were also held during the U19 races at Nakiska. Tyler Werry, Alpine Canada national team member, took home the 2017 super-G Canadian Championship title, adding to his second-place downhill championships medal from Lake Louise. Joining Werry on the podium were two more Canadians with Jake Gougeon finishing in second-place and Canadian Alpine Ski Team member, Brodie Seger, finishing in third-place.
It was first and second-place for Sweden with Rebecca Gunnarstedt finishing in first-place and Nadia Gunnarstedt finishing in second-place. Canada’s Georgia Burgess captured third-place.
