Canada’s Guimond Races To Third In Para Alpine Finals Opener

Canada’s Guimond Races To Third In Para Alpine Finals Opener

Calgary, AB. (March 20, 2025) — The FIS Para Alpine Ski World Cup Finals started today in Veysonnaz (SUI) and Alexis Guimond (Gatineau, QC) led the Canadians with a third-place finish in giant slalom (GS). Racing continues at the Finals with two more GSs and two slaloms in the coming day.

Racing in men standing, Guimond delivered two solid runs to claim his fourth podium in five World Cup races this season. Guimond led a contingent of 12 Canadian athletes, Canada’s largest Para alpine team this season with athletes returning from injury and others making their World Cup debuts.

“It was a good race today,” said Guimond. “I left a little behind on the first run and being in fourth, I went into the second run with the intention of digging deep and being aggressive. It paid off and I’m really happy to be on the podium. Excited to have more racing the next few days and hope to find the top of the podium.”

“We’re usually just a few athletes, so it’s nice to have a big team here,” added Guimond. “It’s a good mix of veterans and young athletes and good opportunity to share our experience with the younger athletes. Really happy to be part of team Canada and to have all the support from the coaches and staff.”

World Cup regulars competing today were Kurt Oatway (Calgary, AB), in men’s sitting, placing sixth, Michaela Gosselin (Collingwood, ON) racing in women standing, finishing eight, and Kalle Ericsson (Kimberley, BC), and guide Sierra Smith (Ottawa, ON), competing in men vision impaired, who were fifth after the first run but didn’t finish their second run.

National team members returning from injury and competing for the first time this season were led by Mollie Jepsum (West Vancouver, BC), racing in women standing in her first race since the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games, delivered two consistent runs for a fifth place finish. Brian Rowland (Merrickville, ON), men sitting, finished in 18th and Katie Combaluzier (Toronto, ON), women sitting, was seventh after the first run but did not finish her second run.

Four Canadians made their first World Cup starts today with Florence Carrier, in women standing placing 12th, Samuel Peters, competing in men sitting, placing 21st, while Tess Beasant, women standing, and Andrea Nelson, women sitting, did not finish their first runs.
